Do you have his e-mail? If you want to do it privately, just try to pull him aside, or e-mail him and ask. You can still casually mention it, like "we should hang out sometime", etc.

I think that if he's that "private", you should just give him your number. If what you really mean is that he is shy, give it to him when no one else is around so that you aren't embarassing him. It won't seem needy if you give it to him with a comment like, "Hey, give me a call if you want to hang out or catch a movie sometime. It's a lot more fun with more than one person.". Good luck.
