What is so special about facebook/myspace?

Don't tell me which is better, I don't care.

All I know is that several people I know are trying to get me to get a facebook page, and I don't understand its appeal at all. I mean, if you want to stay in touch, why not just email or use a cell phone like the rest of the modern world?

It seems to be just a fast as email except you can see the person's face.

Doesn't seem private at all. Completely inexplicable.

I have a few friends who feel the same way -- rather than posting all this info on some webpage, if you want to communicate, just email or (gasp!) call!

But I caved and opened up both kinds of accounts. I really enjoy it because I have found people I knew back in the day and have been able to reconnect with them. Especially after the transition from high school to college, I lost track of people -- but now with these social online communities, you can look up alumni from respective schools.

And sometimes I don't feel like calling or emailing -- so I'll put something on my page and if my friends feel like clicking, that's cool with me. Just know your limits -- all my profiles are set to private and I don't post up *every* little detail of my life. I also don't add random people to my friend's list -- that's just weird.

Some people just don't mind those sites. Some people don't want to e-mail, and its a way to find more people to talk to. But then there are others who don't like them. Its a matter of opinion really. If people want to go on myspace and facebook that is their business.

I don't know, but lots of people are obssessed with it. Maybe they have nothing else better to do LOL.

Actually, people use myspace for these few reasons:

1) To have more friends

2) To flirt(btw, i have seen this many times...)

3) To portray their skill in designing their own internet page(for free)

Actually, if you use the e-mailing system or the cell phone technology, you cannot just call any random number and then tell the person who uses that number to be your friend or just e-mail some random e-mail address and tell them to be your friend. That my fellow human being, may be called blackmailing. What i mean by portraying their skill in designing the page is that you can actually put backgrounds and songs and pictures by the embeded format. If they created their own website, it may cost a tiny little fee, but who in this world now would give money away?? Almost the majority of the world has free in their vocabulary...Some people have uber cool pages...Also, if you want to make your account a private one, which only friends you added could view, you could change the settings to your account and make it private...If your friends want you to get a facebook page, well, i guess you are entitiled to your own opinion. But, the reasons, well what i know people use myspace or facebook for, is all stated.

I'm not sure there are very valid reasons to "stay in touch" on MySpace, but I'll give you some of the reasons Facebook and Yuniti ( http://yuniti.com ) are more useful than email:

1) When you upload new photos, you don't have to individually email each friend. They're automatically sent an update saying "Ryan has added new photos"

2) On Yuniti, you have the option of showing your contact info to your close friends, such as email, IM, phone #, and address. That way if your information ever changes, you can simply update it there and your friends will automatically be notified.

Social networking websites allows anyone to create an account and then liaise with the millions of other people that have similar, or not so similar interests to your own! There are a number of great social networking websites such as Myspace, facebook etc are used by millions of people including polititions, celebritys and musicians for promoting themselves, and there are many animals who have there own Myspace profiles!! These sites are largely supported by advertising, in the form of banner ads that appear on the top of most pages.

Yeah, you can just call or e-mail or whatever, but let's face it, you don't always do that. It's just a good way to stay in the loop a little bit with old friends. I know what a lot of friends from high school are up to these days because of Facebook, and I would have no idea without it. We didn't stay in touch enough that I would just call to say "hi," but I like knowing where they live, how many kids they have, what job they have, etc.
